Canadian crimes are generally divided into summary,
indictable or hybrid offenses. Indictable offenses include only
the most serious crimes, which are punishable by at least 2 years
imprisonment in a federal penitentiary. Since the Canadian criminal
code is used by all provinces, territories and municipalities,
the definition of indictable offense is uniform in all jurisdictions.
(These are comparable to felonies). Summary offenses are less serious
(comparable to misdemeanors). This search covers felonies and some
misdemeanors.
